Who We Are
We invite you to explore and discover just what makes Leila Day a special community.
Leila Day Nurseries, Inc. is an accredited, private nonprofit child care center serving children of working families from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Our guiding principle is to foster the children’s social, emotional, intellectual and physical development within a warm and nurturing environment that is based on sound principles of child development and early childhood education.
Leila Day is a progressive, play-based school where childhood is revered and celebrated. We believe in schooling filled with joyful adventures, meaningful relationships, and discovery through play. Teachers plan learning experiences around the needs and interests of the children. Learning environments, both indoors and in the natural world are created with great intention in order to encourage curiosity, exploration, and experimentation. Children make discoveries, form ideas, and reach deeper understandings about themselves and their place in the world.
Our child-centered curriculum is rooted in children’s interests, ideas, and abilities. We create meaningful learning experiences by weaving together observations and documentation of children’s play, the rhythms and occurrences in the natural world, and the skills and benchmarks outlined in the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards. The curriculum emerges and evolves as our children‘s interests and curiosities unfold. Through play, children explore and develop cognitive, social, emotional, creative, and physical skills. Language, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts are integrated into our learning environments and experiences.
Leila Day is more than a school. We are a community of children, families, teachers, staff, administrators, and board members who come together around common values. We believe in curiosity, inquiry, empathy, kindness, and diversity. We celebrate childhood and we honor the voices of young children. Our community is made up of families from all around the globe whose unique experiences and perspectives deepen our understandings of the world, one another, and ourselves.
